Oh, Snap!

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Yesterday, the SR50 rebuild project suffered its first set back as one of the two brand-new piston rings was accidentally snapped in half (by someone who will remain nameless) during what we would now call a failed dry run session.  A new set of Malossi piston rings has been ordered and should arrive in about a week.  These tiny piston rings of small two-stroke engines are unforgivingly fragile (i.e. can’t be stretched too much) and therefore must be handled with care.–Lorenzo

A clean snap

Stretch it too far, and you will suffer the consequences

I was wandering if you had started working on it yet. Was that the old rings?

Nope, it’s one of the new ones!
      It’s a little set back.

I was told today that these piston rings are made of cast iron. Why, because cast iron doesn’t bend, and therefore doesn’t lose tension.
