Rain, Or Shine

Sunday, January 4, 2009

How do you explain that yesterday, for example, when most of the local meteorologists and The Weather Channel ™ forecasted it as having an 80% chance of rain, and it turned out that we got two drops (both landed on my face-shield); and yet today, with just 30% chance we got completely soaked?

Stephen showed up shortly after eleven o’clock today at Rao’s on his Honda Metro “Red 5” since the seat on his Vespa GT200l has been removed and shipped to Pirate Upholstery for some custom padding job.  Ride in comfort, right?  Especially on those nice long rides when the padding that Mother Nature gave you could really use some help (in the form of a man-made gel).  We know that Stephen is committed to riding since he frequently commutes to work on his Vespa and has ridden over a hundred miles a day on several occasions.  But it was during and after the Dam Ride, which he took with Ed and Paul, that convinced him precisely more support was needed where Mother Nature has failed him.  So if extended comfort is what you desire, then seek out an experienced  local upholster, or give Pirate a try.

Ultimately for 2009, how much will you ride?  Don’t have an answer now?  That’s OK.  I am not one to make, or fulfill a New Year resolution if I ever made one; but it seems that Paul over in DeRidder has made up his mind already and I certainly applaud him for his courage and determination.  Knowing Paul, he would probably exceed his own wildest projection.  Really, it’s not a numerical goal that you should ever try to set for yourself; but a mind-set,  something that can’t be quantified, like passion, for example.  How much and how you will accomplish that will be guided by your passion for scootering.  That passion, once excited, can always and easily be replenished, like refilling a tank of gas, and hopefully will never run out.  You can feel it, too, like a good vibration running through your entire body, making your hair stand up–that’s it!  Your passion for riding a scooter may be different from mine, and that’s OK, too.  When I ride, I feel happy, yes, even euphoric.  Sometimes when the temperature gets close to 40-degrees, and I am all-insulated and toasty, I feel extremely alive  inside.  On those days when I don’t get to ride much for whatever reasons, I crave it intensely and I want to ride even more.  I guess you would call that a withdrawal.  So yes, there I confessed for being a scooter junkie.  By the way, tomorrow’s chance of rain is 50 70% (Ch.12 just updated).–Lorenzo

    I can explain that.
Their forcast has to be inverted.
    80 per cent = 20 per cent
30 per cent = 70 per cent and so forth.

You might be on to something there. I like your interpretation better. Is that how it works in Vegas? —Lorenzo

Meteorology is not an exact science. A forecast 80% chance of rain means temperature X, atmo pressure Y, and humidity Z eight times out of ten will result in precipitation. This particular time, it didn’t. The 30% time is kinda like hitting the Lotto…
