Scooting’ & Toobin’ On the Guadalupe River May 16th-18th 2008

As the representatives of SCGT at the River Rally 2008, Ron and I (Lindsay) had a Scoot Happy time!! The weather was perfect–cool at night and warm and sunny during the day.

We departed Port Arthur at about 1:30pm Friday. Our only stop on the way to Gruene was at Buc-ee’s (in Luling), which is the ultimate stop for great snacks and the best jerkys in Texas…

We met-up with Aaron there, who was on his way back to Shiner, Texas with a new tire for Nick, who had a flat and no spare on his vintage Vespa. Nick spent his time on the side of the road doing 300 sit-ups (which nobody believed) and taking a nap. The Police showed up after a passerby reported a dead person lying by a scooter. Thanks to Aaron for putting an extra 160 miles on his Vespa to rescue Nick.

After about a 5-hour trip we arrived at DOUBLE ROCKIN’ R Camp Ground at about 7:00pm excited and ready to go! It was great seeing our old friends from Houston, San Antonio, Pasadena, Austin, Dallas and from all over Texas. Making new friends and knowing that we all have a passion and common bond to scoot can give you an ultimate high!!

On Friday night we scooted into Gruene in for dinner in this beautiful little town that is gently resisting changing with time. We felt as if we were in a time warp back in the late 1800’s. The rest of the evening was spent visiting and doing a little over-indulgence. It was a big party! Joey, a friend of mine from Pasadena, Texas had a little slip on the gravel on his Stella and scraped his knee and elbow. So glad that he was OK as he was able to participate in all the activities. He is a trooper! His Stella’s road-rash injuries, however, are more permanent.

On Saturday, we all rode along the gorgeous Guadalupe River. The temperature was about 75- degrees yet I never broke a sweat. We traveled on winding roads carved through the hills, filled with campsites and tubers floating along the river. Most of the route was covered by shady trees creating a cool and exhilarating ride. We stopped at Canyon Dam and were treated to a daredevil show by Jeremy of the Royal Bastards, much to the amusement of several Harley riders. We continued the ride along Purgatory Road, which is a two lane, lightly traveled road through hills and valleys.

Free time followed the ride. We ate at a quaint restaurant called the Gristmill Restaurant in Gruene. It was an open-air setting with three levels overlooking the river. The Gymkhana followed, which was held in a large field by the Gruene Harley Davidson dealership. After about 100 scooterists lined up along the parking lot of the dealership to view the festivities, the dealership called the Police to have us moved, and our Gymkhana antics were scrutinized by a police car for twenty minutes. The dealership apologized by giving us ballpoint pens and key chains, so all was forgiven.

The funniest event was the Baby Pool Race. Now this is something we had never seen before. (Check out the pics)

Saturday night was filled with antics fueled by hooch, such as naked fire jumping (sorry, no photos available), serenading by Charlie, the Royal Bastards and the Cabana Boys (hope they keep their day jobs), a night run along the river by seven determined scooterists in the cold night, and general mayhem and merriment.

Note some of the coolest 4 wheeled rides on the planet: the “Gorgeous Hideaway”, a 1958 Chevy school bus converted to a camper by Kevin, a 1961 VW Kombi camper bus owned by Bret, and a modern Chevy Tahoe with a sixty-something Chevy front-end clip. Also note the neat 2 wheelers: a Piaggio Fly 150 with a British flag wrapped body, the rat bike “Sea-Hag”, which we understand was tea-bagged in the restroom (also no pics available).

Special thanks go to Lester, Erika, Jeff, Gary, Mark, Dawn and all who put together such a great rally!! Now for the number of attendees, according to Houston Scooter Battalion, there were about 75 scooters and 100 attendants, estimated. We had a helluva time, and can’t wait for the next rally!

This has been a Ron and Lindsay collaboration.

The Sea Hag was Tea Bagged! there’s a country song there somewhere.
My only question is what was the Sea hag doing in the Restroom?

    Great report, Lindsay!

Stephen, that is a very good question. Life is full of mysteries and that one will be one forever. We had heard the Royal Bastards had something to do with it. It is only a rumor. 🙂 LOL!! Thanks for the comment, we had a FAB TIME!!

As a gag, the old nag of a Sea Hag was tea-bagged as she grabbed a drag on a fag (the cigarette kind). Say that really fast three times.
