Quick Review: The Burrito At La Morenita

Monday, March 31, 2008

(Monday, 3/31/08 @ the Beaumont location.)

Simply the most AWESOME custom-made burritos between Beaumont, Texas and Santa Ana, California (where I used to live and work); or anywhere-else for that matter. At a mere $3.99 a pop, it is the absolute bargain of the 2nd Bush Administration, period! Order a delicious cup of Horchata to wash down your tasty, satisfying burrito for only 99 cents more; then you can take the rest of that garbage you’ve been eating and calling “Mexican food” and trow (yes, I do mean trow) them to the dogs! Two locations, see MAP.–Lorenzo

La Morenita Meat Market sits on the NW corner of 11th St. & College St.– site of the former Poncho’s Mexican Buffet, which went under before Hurricane Rita. (See the Poncho’s sign still stands.)

Cure for the over-celebrated: La Morenita also serves an unbelievable menudo on Saturdays and Sundays for $4.99/bowl. Their tacos are no slouch, either; $1.29/ea. In this photo, taco de lengua (i.e. cow’s tongue).

A close-up of the luxuriously irresistible bowl of menudo. Admittedly a taste which must be acquired, menudo enjoys a large following especially, but not exclusively to the over-imbibed. Also in the older cultures, in order to honor the slain animal (and not being wasteful), one must consume the entire animal, including in this case the stomach chambers of the cow, i.e. tripe (the main ingredient in making menudo) .

Immeditely north of La Morenita stands the enormous, popular Beaumont landmark “Ken Doll” of Ken’s Muffler Shop. Gloriously repainted after Hurricane Rita of 2005.

A close-up of the “Ken Doll” reveals that he sports a single left earring. Tres, tres chic!

A quick video tour of La Morenita:

Even better than Tacos LaBamba inside Carlos Video? I’ll be the Judge of that. I’m getting one today.

It’s no April Fool’s joke; but I will let you be the judge. A very satisfied judge…

Damn you Californian ex-patriots and your temptations. I too am living in exile in Texas after being thwarted by the high housing prices. People in Texas think the crap they call Mexican food is good. BULLOCKS!! I have gotten better Mexican food at gas stations in California (Shell station off of Ynez in Temecula, CA) than anywhere in Texas. Oh, and no Del Tacos and no In-n-outs. I live in Austin and just might trek to Beaumont for a good burrito. Any good places in Austin?

Horchata is the nectar of the Gods!

    Sorry, Don

As far as I am aware there’re only two La Morenita Meat Markets (one in Beaumont and the other in Port Arthur) by the same owner. You may be able to find a good Mexican market/deli in your area whose name may not necessarily be “La Morenita”, but the food will be fresh and the burritos loaded with goodies.

    Cheers!–Lorenzo

Great food! I get the beef caldo (soup) and my husband orders the tapas. I am addicted to their rice and have to have La Morenita fix at least twice a month. I live in Woodville so husband stops in after working in Beaumont and brings home take out. His brother owns the muffler shop next door.

Great Authentic Food! Which I prefer the real thing!

Glad you liked it, Kat! You’re right, their caldo de res is excellent and so is the rice! They have some of the tastiest Mexican food in town, imo. When we scoot up to Woodville, we usually eat at the Pickett House. Do you have another favorite place to eat, or perhaps a good breakfast place? Let me know, thanks.

Please ask your husband’s brother if he needs help straightening up “Ken the Giant Muffler Man”. He looks sad all crooked like that after Ike 😦

    Hi,
I do have one that I like to go to . Its called La Playita in Bolivar , Tx. It is family owned and they have some good food. They have Menudo on the weekends and just good Mexican food. I havent been there since the hurricane and they had to rebuild. Before they even had great seafood , fried shrimp and oysters were the bomb! but dont know now about that part now…There hamburgers are even to die for. Great breakfast lunch and dinner, supper. All I can say is its all good! We used to camp in our Rv at Stingaree Marina sites but now we dont. I am very very picky about food and hope you will check it out if you already havent. If you know anyplace that makes good Caldo let me know I am a Caldo freak!

They serve great Caldo de Res at La Morenita, too.
Check it out when in Beaumont!
